For one of my English classes (Introduction to Teaching Language Arts), I partnered with a classmate and completed a mentor text study. This study focused on a particular author, Steve Jenkins, and the various children’s books he’s written. My partner and I read various texts by Steve and analyzed whether they are worthy to use in the classroom. His texts are all non-fiction and focus on science. After discussing each text, we identified a writing craft the author used. My partner and I were in charge of naming and explaining the craft. Lastly, we created mini lessons that could be taught to elementary students. These mini lessons focused on a particular craft and how to implement it within their writing. This will benefit my teaching because I’ve practiced creating lessons for writing. Even though my emphasis in education is not English, I still feel prepared enough to teach writing to my future students. Besides creating mini lessons, this study required me to analyze texts to use in a potential classroom and deem whether they are appropriate or not.
